What Came First The Cello Or Violin?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

It is believed that the violin came before the Cello.

The violin emerged from the northern parts of Italy during the early 16th century. By the year 1557 the violin already started spreading through out all of Europe. However it is believed that the oldest documented violin was constructed some time in the year 1555 by Andrea Amati.

As for the Cello, it has been developed way after the violin; in fact the making of the cello has been based on the bass violin. It is said that the cello was developed at some time in the year 1660 in the city of Bologna in Italy. The Cello created a much finer bass sound.  Around the year 1700 the cello was highly popularized by Italian cellists.
