According to studies and research there is not one style of leadership followed by managers. There has been analysis done which shows how different behavior patterns exhibited different styles of leadership.
The autocratic style of leader is strict and assumes responsibility for all aspects of the operation. Communication is one-way with little or no scope for feedback. Within the autocratic style we can identify the 'tough' autocrat who demands total obedience from the workforce and the 'kindly' autocrat who demands obedience on the basis that he knows the best.
The bureaucratic style leader manages by the rule book without any exceptions. Subordinates are permitted little freedom or scope for initiative. There are advantages in terms of reliability and inevitability with each person knowing exactly where they stand but the leader tends to be rigid and creates anger in the workforce.
The democratic leader seeks the opinions of subordinates and strives for mutual understanding. Democratic implies acceptance of group decisions, where as most manager consult but keep the ultimate responsibility for decision making.
