When somebody completely engrossed himself in his work even his dreams reveal him very pertinent things. As happened with Friedrich Kekule; he was commuting in a bus in London and he fell asleep. In his dream what he found became the basis of modern organic chemistry; he had the clear vision about how benzene rings were formed.
This phenomenon is quite common with scientists and creative people because most of them are involved in a profession which they love to do, not involve in something that society has forced on themselves.
We also find that when we take a break from what we always do, it works as a catalyst to our thought process and we take a big stride in terms of thought provoking ideas.
