Why not? The site began as a Q&A helpsite where people could ask questions and receive information, or answer questions. Points are an extra perk that shows one's participation in the site, and nothing more.
Like the previous answer indicates, it's a helpsite, meant to enlighten and enable learning and sharing of knowledge.
