When you are engaged in the practice of self-disclosure, you should take care of specific factors that play a huge role in creating the impact of self-disclosure. These factors are inclusive of the motivation and pertinence of the situation. Moreover the scope of opportunities that are available for open and honest responses should also be considered. Other than that, you should think over the probability of the listener engaging in self-disclosure. Most of all, you should thoroughly and logically envisage the possible burdens that your self-disclosure might impose on you and the listener.

Engaging in self-disclosure is one thing and listening to self-disclosure is a totally different thing. In order to be an effective listener to self-disclosure, one should practice the skills of effective and active listening. Moreover they should support and reinforce the discloser. A very important aspect of being a listener to self-disclosure is to keep an internal and external commitment to keeping the disclosure confidential. This should also include the pledge of not using the disclosure as a weapon against the person.
