How Do You Make A Good Environment For A Box Turtle?

Answer Question

Housing: A 20 gallon aquarium is the minimum size needed for a box turtle. Consider larger aquariums as well, or make a larger case out of plywood. The bigger, the better. The bottom of this should be humid substrate (bedding material), like medium to large wood chips, mixed with peat moss and a sand and soil mixture. Anything drier will make for poor health in the turtle. It's important there also be a hide box where the turtle can get out of sight.

Temperature: The indoor temperature should be no colder than 15 Celsius at night, and gradually warmed to 21-27 Celsius in the day time. You can get a 75-100 watt incandescent bulb with a reflector to provide a basking area at one end of the cage, between 28-32 Celsius.

Water: An easy to clean, shallow water dish (big enough for the turtle to get into) should be available. The water should be shallow enough that the turtle can get in but the water does not go over it's chin.
