Most sources consider Bodell to be a variation on Bodwell, Bodle and Bothwell.
Bothwell is considered the most common spelling. It has Scottish origin, and was written as Botheuyle in the ancient past. There was a lordship (estate) held by the Bothwell family, outside of Glasgow, in the late medieval ages. This is the site of the modern Bothwell village, in North Lanarkshire.
Learn more about the history of the village of Bothwell. Nowadays it sports some of the most expensive properties in south-western Scotland, and is cited as a haven of right-wing voting in an otherwise rather LibDem-, Labour- and SNP voting country.
House of names claims to have a genuine family crest for Bothwell (and variant names).
Alternatively, Bodell may be a Cornish name, instead of Gaelic. It would translate as "home of Dell" (see source).
