The Aegean is a region of the world near to Greece and Turkey. The Aegean Islands are in Greece, in the Aegean Sea, and include the Dodecanese Islands, the Cyclades islands, Lesvos, Samos and Chios. The have an area of 9122 square kilometres and a population of about half a million people.
The Aegean Sea is the sea that exists in the Mediterranean region between Greece and Turkey. There is some political tension between the two countries over the area; the Dardanelles, the strait that connects the Aegean sea with the Sea of Marmara, was the site of heavy fighting in World War I and there are current disputes over the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Kos. These are Greek islands that lie very close to Turkey, so could be said to be in Turkish waters, so deciding the sea limits is a difficulty.
Ancient cultures flourished in the region in the Bronze Age, including the Minoan civilisation of Crete and the Mycenaean civilization of the Peloponese.
