What Are The Scientific Facts Against The Claims Made By Pro-ana Websites?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Even though pro-ana websites tried to portray anorexia as not being the monster it was being made out to be, that claim could not last public scrutiny for too long, especially in the wake of mounting scientific evidence about the very real hazards of being anorexic.

With the passage of time, there were more and more reports being published that gave insights into all the things that could go wrong with an anorexic. While it was originally hard to believe that something that could reduce a person to a mere bag of bones could have anything good at all about it, the established scientific facts that these reports offered the public helped swing public opinion decisively against anorexia.

One such report was published by research teams at Stanford University and the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, California. The researchers conducted a survey on the number of children who were hospitalized with anorexia, and mapped these numbers with the number who visited pro-ana sites. The results indicated the number of hospitalized anorexic children who visited these websites outnumbered anorexic children who did not visit the sites three to one.

Studies such as these only underlined the fact that pro-ana websites were doing more harm than good.
