I'm actually studying that topic now for history, and the reason he did was because he and many of his friends in government believed that if it was not truly a part of christmas, nor was it mentioned anywhere i the bible, then people shouldn't celebrate it. Along with this, he banned many other recreational activities such as dancing etc.He did not want the country backtrack into it's old ways, after the execution of Charles I

Cromwell banned Christmas because he was a Puritan and Puritans dont believe in people enjoying themselves.
