You would definitely have to have sex after your period, if you wanted to conceive a baby.
See, what is fertilization and conception?

A woman's body prepares itself to receive a man's sperm, which, if by chance happens to successfully travel into the woman's uterus, will fertilize the egg that the woman has produced during ovulation, and this will create a baby.
If the sperm fails to successfully fertilize the egg, then the woman's body will automatically shed the special lining that she has developed for the baby. This lining, in the form of blood, travels outside the body's body, and this is known as her period.
Therefore, if you want to conceive a baby, you must wait for your ovulation to take place, which at an average happens about two weeks after your period.
If you conceive, you will not have your period the next month or the next, till you deliver your baby.
