Answer Question

The origin of the word 'jerk' is not known. A sudden twist or an abrupt motion is termed as 'jerk'. Jerk is a jolting motion. When someone suddenly pushes, thrusts, or pulls something or someone, it is termed jerking. For example: he had to jerk the old door to open it. That is he had to give an abrupt thrust to the door. Jerk could also mean 'to say something abruptly or sharply'. For example: he jerked out the answer.

If you make an ice-cream soda at a soda fountain, you are said to have jerked the soda. When a train jerks forward, it moves in sudden and abrupt motions. One could say that his legs jerked from fatigue. It means that his legs made spasmodic movements. A stupid or rude or contemptible person is also termed as a jerk. It is a slang use of the word jerk.
