Tyne Tees Television is the Independent Television (ITV) contractor for North East England. It broadcasts today from Television House in Gateshead. They were previously located at City Road Studios in Newcastle (where they were for 40 years). Their first ever broadcast took place on the 15th of January1959, while their first broadcast from Gateshead took place on the 2nd of July 2005. The station was named after the region's chief rivers, the Tyne and the Tees.
Tyne Tees Television has never been a prolific contributor to ITV, but it has always produced a range of extremely popular shows like Face the Press, Supergran and Crosswits. In 1974, they merged with Yorkshire and formed Trident Limited. They had a brief split in between but renewed their contract under the new name of Yorkshire-Tyne Tees Television PLC. In 1999 Tyne Tees Television had its license to broadcast programs renewed thus ensuring that they can broadcast for another 10 years.
