What Are The Main Types Of Car Insurance Policies That Can Be Purchased In The UK?

Answer Question

There are three main types of car insurance policy generally available in this country:

Third Party Only ~ This covers the policy holder against damage caused by them to someone else's property or injuries to that person. (For the sake of clarity, the first party is the policy holder and the second party is the insurance company.) For example, if your car skidded, hit a fence and your passenger was injured, Third Party Only would pay out to repair the fence and compensate the passenger for their injuries. If your car was wrecked by the impact and you were hurt too, there would be no pay out for that.

Third Party Fire and Theft ~ Identical to Third Party Only but with additional insurance cover to pay out in the event of the policy holder's vehicle being stolen or destroyed by fire.

Fully comprehensive - The most popular form of motor car insurance. A fully comprehensive policy provides cover for damages and injuries to third parties, fire and theft, and damage to the policy holder's vehicle regardless of fault.
