Well many would expect it to be created by an American but it was actually
invented by a Canadian!
The first formalised rules where invented in 1892. The inventor was a man
called James Naismith , a Canadian sports education instructor. Mr Naismith
lived from 1861-1939.
Naismith was instructed by his boss to invent a new sport for his school,
the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Using two peach
baskets and a football Mr Naismith devised the new game complete with 13
rules.
By dividing his class into two team of 9 players each the objective was to
throw the ball into the peach baskets, each time the ball landed in the
basket a point was scored. The basket was attached to the railing in the gym
balcony.
Since the very first game, (with its low score of 0-1) the game has changed
significantly to the sport we know as basketball today.
