The main advantages of keeping animals in zoos is that they get saved from dangers of wildlife. By keeping them in zoo ensures their safety and also helps in keeping them away from diseases that they could not survive in jungle life. At the same time, Zoo provides a way to people to take a closer look at animals and see how they behave. It is an entertainment with purpose where it is educating citizens, there are also benefits for animals.

I have been a zookeeper for over eight years. A lot of times animals in the wild will become injured. If they are injured beyond repair, they will have to live in a zoo. Owls, for example have very fragle bones in their wings. If their bones in their wings break, sometimes it results in no more flight. A flightless owl in the wild will not be able to defend itself easily. It may not survive, so it has to live some place safe. There are also cases where a human takes a baby animal from the wild to try and keep it as a pet. Once the animal grows up after a year, the cute baby animal is not so cute anymore, and may become uncontrolable. So the person takes it to a zoo to live out the rest of its life. Never ever take a baby animal from the wild. If you see a baby animal without a mother, it's probably okay. The mothers have to leave their babies alone every now and then. But if you see no mother for a day, or so, call the proper authorities. In other cases, baby animals are born in zoos and used to educate the visitors that come to the zoo.

Advantages
Breeding Endangered Species – saves them from extinction
See wild animals up close that you may not have been able to see other wise
Is informative for Children
Disadvantages
Do not provide suitable environments for wild animals
Animals may be kept in small cages and suffer from stress
The climate and habitat is often different from their native environment and some find it difficult to adjust
However safariparks have a large space for the animals to roam around and it becomes apparent if an animal is uncomfortable and not happy in their enviroment.

The advantages to zoos far outweigh the disadvantages. Protection of threatened and endangered animals, along with education, are the primary goals of most modern zoos. The only disadvantage is the animals living environment....which is only a disadvantage if you continue to personify animals. They do not need wide open spaces. Most animals live in a certain range all their lives. Sure their homes in zoos are smaller, but there is also no threat from predators as well as a constant food supply. Animals in zoos are not completely domesticated and should not be thought of as such. They are not of the same mentality as your puppy or kitten at home. Zoos are the equivalent of a paradise retreat. Although i agree that some "zoos" are not modern zoos and literally hold animals in cages. In regards to these "zoos" i believe animals are better off in the wild than contained in small cages and harassed by people. Modern zoos= good. Carnival zoos=bad

The animals would have a greatly increased life span because 1.) there are no predators 2.) they will never starve for food and 3.) they'll always have a place to sleep at night.

Keeping animals in the zoo is a great way to keep them healthy. Doing this protects them from diseases and being in danger from wild life. Food is provided for the animals. This is also great for the public not only is a fun experience, but you learn something too. There are many advantages for keeping animals in zoo, including our entertainment.

I honestly think zoos are bad places. Here are a few reason why.
My first reason is that there is a lack of space. You have so many animals in one little zoo. Sure if you have more animals in one zoo, the more families that will come. How do you think those animals feel though? They shouldn't’t have to be all stuck up in one little place. If you were in school and 500 students had to share one classroom, I don’t think that you would like that too much. So why do that to the animals? Its just rude.
My second reason is that they are kept in captivity. Its inhuman. They should be free to roam wherever they choose. If they could be free and out in the wild, they could also choose who they want to mate with instead of just any animal of their kind. If they don’t get alone too well with their mate, things could go wrong. They could kill each other. I don’t think that is very smart. Unless you want them to die go ahead and have a zoo.
My last reason is that all animals don’t have the same needs. The food and other thing that they have to get is a very large quantity. They take money out of our taxes to get these things that are needed. That’s not fair for us. They would have to buy all different things for all of the many animals that they have. And the climate isn’t the same for all animals. Its like you living in Florida your whole life and then someone making you move to Alaska. How would you like that?
To conclude, I do not think zoos are a positive place for animals to live. Have you ever wondered what it would be like without these horrific homes? I have. I think it would be a fantastic improvement.

I agree with you wild animals should be in the wild but unfortunately us human beings are destroying their natural habitats at such a fact rate that one of these days the Zoo would be the only place where you would find the wild animals. The same with birds. To me it is cruel to keep them in little cages. I had a bird and she was so tamed that she could come and go as she please. I never kept her in a cage.

You can learn things you didn't know about a type of animal

NO! Wild animals are meant to be in the wild thats why they are called wild animals! Also not only are the wild animals in danger but so are the zoo keepers, so many people have died due to animals being kept in a cage and eventually they crank and go mad. Also how do we know that the animals aren't being abused. Also once they are in the zoo they lose the ability to survive in the wild. Animals if they are endangered they should go to a wild life sanctuary not to a zoo. But zoos are not only bad they are good under some conditions like keeping them alive so they don't go extinct. And zoos help us learn more about the animals. But still wild animals are wild and deserve to be kept in the wild. (:

Most people would agree that zoos do have a lot of advantages and these are my reasons why!
Do you realise that zoos are doing the best possible to help these animals? A lot of the animals are becoming endangered because there's not many of them left. So the zoos are helping by breeding more animals like polar bears, red pandas, white tigers and many more amazing wild animals.
While animals are in zoos being protected, scientists can look at them up close and learn more things about them.
Peope say when animals such as penguins and lions are in zoos being loved and cared for, they don't get all the great food they get in the wild. But this is not true because take a look at lions, they get meat and fruit and vegetables and penguins get fish of all types!
Zoo keepers look after sick and injured animals and then send them back to the wild when they are 100% better.
Children also get to see these incredible creatures when they may not ever see them in the wild as close as this.
So, do you now see that animals in zoos are a good thing (after all)!

Pretty much the purpose is so people can get a closer look at the animals! Plus, animals are animals, they are meant to be in the wild life. Once you get the animals you can bring them back. THe poor animals get to spend the rest of their life in a too small cage with a bunch of freak people staring at them and taking pictures of them. Which in fact, probably scares the animals too the death with that flash. It does no good to the animals they probably hate it in there it just makes them more crazy and wild. So ya the only reason is to make money from the people. I'm not anti- zoo or anything I love it but the poor animals inside. :(

Have you noticed that animals in zoos are only endangered? Thats cause zoos are there to help reproduce them so they might not become extinct. Yes i know that there is also wild life preserves... But in a zoo everyone can see them, i mean wouldnt you be sad if they didnt have polar bears in zoos? And they became extinct and you never got to see one FOR REAL? Yes i know that they BELONG in the wild.. But in zoos we are ONLY trying to help them.... They are NOT there JUST for OUR purpose.... :D

I think zoo is the best place to watch different kinds of animals because we can know about their typical sound, their food habits and their likes and dislikes. Moreover, they give much pleasure and is also a past time for the people.Their keeping is,no doubt,a costly affair. One will have to devote one's attention towards their rearing, otherwise they can meet death.

Wild animals belong in the wild. Would you like to caged up? No! But if the animal is injured on endangered then zoos are a good place to be protected. Anyway some zoos are really nice places. They even have toys for every animal! Xx

One advantage is that it can help save nearly extinct species. A disadvantage is that newly born animals can adapt to the zoo life and they might not be able to survive the wild environment or in their natural habitat.

Advantages:
The government is going for zoos, so animal protestors can’t do anything
Scientists study animals so that they can work out how an animal won’t become bored
IVF treatment can also be done on animals as a method to help them to breed
Disadvantages:
The people who are working in zoos must understand about animal reproduction
Making more of an animal may change the effect on a particular area e.g. Making more cheetahs near a farm could mean that the goats and sheep in the farm get eaten
Most animals will become extinct over time anyway

There are advantages and disadvantages to a zoo. In a zoo endangered animals are kept, protecting them from pochers and other threats. Animals are sometimes kept in zoos because they are injured and they are nursed back to health later either being released into the wild or kept in the zoo. In a zoo there are disadvantages like the cages are to small, it's not a proper habitat, the animals are constantly being watched by people anoying them and they sometimes just aren't HAPPY! Think about it how would you feel if you were in a zoo?

Zoos ar good because they halp endangered species. If they are close extinction, like the dinosaurs, then they can add more to the species.
Zoos are bad because they do't let the animals roam free. They are closed in a cage and not let out.

There are far more advantages than disadvantages, more and more zoos are now non-profit organizations based on conservation of the animals they harbor and they breed and raise endangered animals as well as educate the public on what they can do to help. A lot of zoos even take injured animals and nurse them bak to health before reintroducing them back into their natural habitat.
The cons to zoos would primarily be based on the zoos for profit, and probably most of them do not sustain the proper habitats for their animals and are capitalizing on the public's curiosity and are not likely to offer much education because they are not trying to conserve they are trying to make money. I believe that most zoos nowadays are non-profit though, at least where I live all of the zoos that I know of are.

I've been doing research for a debate i'm taking part in, the motion is: Zoos are cruel and should be closed down.
I was put in the against team and I wasn't too sure about it, i wanted to be for.
But I have just done 3 hours research and I have changed my mind, zoos are pretty great when managed well.
Some great points here.

Well not really any animals should live in the wild and find their own food unless they are injured in some way but after it has been healed it should be brought back to their habitat because a lot of sharks have died in zoos because the water wasnt right

From ancient age our relation is with animals.some they gave us benifites and some time not. This situation is still.we can learn about animals through zoos because without zoos it can't be possible.moreover ,zoos are also impotent for breeding endangered animals because many animals are threatening and getting extinct.scientist can study and undertake research about animals.however there are some disadvantages of zoos but they are not too much.because every thing has advantages or disadvantages both.I think ;safari prkes are now releasing these disadvantages because they are giving natural anvironment to animals.

Yes definetly it is a good place for us but not a good one for animals ... They are born wild and should be allowed live wild and die wild... After all animals are living creatures they not meant for entertainment

There are pros and cons for every thing
likewise zoo also a good and a bad thing
zoo lets us live a natural life but it also degrades the life standard of the animals.
