What Does The Surname Paterson Mean?

I am new to Blurtit and would like to ask questions but I am not sure how to fill in the ask question section on the site itself.

This is a wild guess, but Pater is the word for father, in... I believe, German. My guess is that it was created by a family whose occupation/profession depended on reputation, and that was passed from father to son. This surname is in my extended family.
