Pakistan's top leader is President Pervez Musharraf. Musharraf assumed office in 1999.
Pakistan's highest political office was that of the "Governor General," from 1947 until 1956. During this time Pakistan was a dominion of the British Monarchy. When the country established itself as a republic and created its own constitution in 1956, the office of the governor general was replaced by a president.
