Teaching your dog tricks can be quite entertaining and fruitful. You need to have a lot of patience while training your dog. You can get a book on dog training or surf the internet for it. You can also look in your local yellow pages for dog trainers. There are a few easy tricks you can teach your dog while you are at it. First, teach him how to sit. This is quite easy. Turn your dog's attention towards you and keep repeating the word 'sit'. Next thing to do is to lower your dog's back so that he understands what to do when you say 'sit'. Next easy trick is to teach your dog how to shake hands. Lay out your hand in front of your dog and say 'shake hands'. Take his paw and keep it on your hand and shake it. Seeing this, the dog will understand what to do. There are many other tricks you can teach your dog.

I agree-patience,and don't spend long periods of time, lots of short sessions with lots of praise and negative reinforcement hasn't turned out many tricks!

Agreement here as well. I can tell you by experience that especially with a puppy, make sure that you spend approximately 15 minutes each day teaching your new friend his/her tricks. Give a lot of positive reinforcement and make sure each session ends on a positive note. Do not ever end with them not completing the task. Make sure you stay in tune with them and notice when they lose interest so that you can end the session. Once the session is over make sure you give them the play time with YOU that they crave as well. This will reinforce the bond that you are fun as well as the Alpha dog in the pack. Get the Lassie training tapes! There is a lot of great information and training tips on this tapes and you will end up with the most intelligent dog on the block guaranteed! I did this with my border collie/springer spaniel mix and started her from the time she was 6 weeks old. She is now 12 years old and she has never stopped learning nor has she forgotten what she learned from these valuable tapes.
