Can Your Landlord Give You 10 Days To Vacate And Then Change The Locks And Basically Seize Your Stuff Before The 10 Days Is Up?

I live in Arkansas, I was given an eviction notice due to nonpayment. I was given until 07/25 to vacate. I had most of my stuff out of the apartment, but still needed to clean and get a few remaining things. I went by today 07/24 to get the rest of my belongings and the locks were changed.

It is completely illegal to change the locks and keep the belongings of the tenant when there is still time in notice,  in any state of U.S. You must complain against the landlord to the police so that you can get back your belongings.

No your landlord can't do that with you. On eviction notice you have right to respond in the court and give explanation. In the notice you also have days to pay your rent and still live in the apartment. Contact the concerned law enforcing department to make a complain.

If you're given a 10 day eviction notice, you have all of the 10 days to move, clean etc.  It's absolutely illegal for him to changing the locks before the 10 days are up.  Is there some kind of landlord/tenant board, that you can approasch about what he did?  If he kept anything of yours, or just threw it away, he should be held responsible for it, because he did it before the 10 days were up.  Good luck!

A relationship of landlord and tenant is guided by contract, written or oral ( Oral tenancy is subject to local laws). However, the fact is that the tenancy is governed by mutual contract and  rent laws applicable. If 10 days notice is what has been agreed between you and your landlord and that is not in violation of the local rent laws, then in that case he can issue 10 days notice of eviction for non-payment of rent.

However, he cannot seize you articles and cannot put his own lock, prior to the expiry of notice period. You can file a civil case for repossession and/or lodge police complaint for this illegal action taken by your landlord.
