What Is The Difference Between A Rat Snake And A Copperhead As Far As Colors & Patterns In South Georgia? And Which Has A Red Belly?

I was in the yard the other day and went to pick up a pine cone and there was a red baby snake. I didn't know it until I killed it that the belly was also red. I need to know the type of snake this is because I have small children running around in the yard. I thought at first that it might be a red rat snake but the red belly through me off. And I also know where there's a baby the mother is not far away.

One of the easiest ways to tell the difference between a Rat Snake and a Copperhead is to look at its eyes.  A rat snake has eyes with a round pupil whereas the Copperhead has eyes that resemble those of a cat.  I do not believe either of them have red bellies.  A copperhead also has a yellow tail during its juvenielle stage.  Also Rat Snakes have no problem climbing up trees but you will not find a Copperhead climbing a tree.  It sounds like what you saw could be a Red-Bellied Water Snake or a Red-Bellied Snake. Do a quick google search and see if either resembles what you saw!
