Why Are Charlton Athletic Football Club Nicknamed The 'Addicks?

Charlton Athletic football club are nicknamed the 'Addicks' because their first patron was a local fishmonger named Arthur Bryan. The word 'addick' is slang for 'haddock' .
By 1909 Arthur Bryan had a whole chain of fish shops, when Charlton were in the final of the Woolwich Cup.
Fans paraded giant poles with large haddocks on them around the football ground for all to see.
A selection of cartoons from 1908 calls the team the 'Haddocks', which changed to 'Haddick' and eventually 'Addick'.
The club had two other nicknames, the 'Robins' and 'the Valiants' but neither have caught on to the extent of the 'Addicks' which is now the official nickname of the club.

Charlton Athletic are in the Premiership. They finished in 13th place in the 2005 / 06 season, but have lost their long-standing manager, Alan Curbishley who has been at the club for fifteen years and is somewhat of a hero there.
