I don’t have a degree in this but I’ve been around enough to say a few words that might help you. Without knowing how you and others handle your kid that is hard to answer properly without the risk of sounding a bit rude :) I have seen babies speak at 1 year old and some only at 2 and it’s always the parents that decided of that by the way they interacted with them. (Besides mental health problems) From what I've seen, parents that do everything for their kids end up with kids that can't do anything on their own until late (very late).
First of all he learns from you and whoever interacts with him. So you have to take this into account as some people talk to kids like they're retarded off the bat and some don't. I mean because someone doesn't understand or can say a word properly doesn’t mean you should start doing sign language or start making the same weird sound right? That’s just not good on the long run.
Most babies will speak 10-20 words at 18 months and over 50 at the age of 2 but yours has been learning some other things than words obviously and hopefully.
I wouldn't worry about it too much until he's 2 years old. We all learn different things at a different pace. Sometimes you have to give people a reason to do something...I mean babies are people and they won't do something unless they need to so for example when he extends his hand or makes that special sound to get food pretend you don't quite understand and tell him clearly that you don't get what he wants, this way he will try harder to speak it. Also don't speak to him like he's a retard. Really I see that a lot, I know we all want to assimilate with the baby but we must let the baby assimilate to us. If you have been doing all the right things with him then for sure you should take him to a doctor to make sure everything is physically fine because if he has a problem it would be better that it got resolved as early as possible.
