What Chinese Dialect Is Most Commonly Spoken In Los Angeles's Chinatown?

With rare exception, if I speak in Mandarin or Cantonese, the local response is "I don't speak English!". Which is kinda funny, but my tones aren't the problem. The immigrants here are not speaking the Pu-tong-hua, that's all I know. I'm understood more in China than in Chinatown. What dialect is most practical here?

I missed Chinatown in LA but regularly visit in San Fransisco.  There they do speak a sort of Americanized version of Mandarin.  I think it is sort of like TexMex in Dallas.  The food and the language take on local trends.

Chinatown LA is kind of sleepy; you didn't miss much.

Well, I don't know what is Mandarin or Cantonese, so I'm not quite sure how to answer that kind of question.
