The Chamber was the fifth novel by John Grisham. It was written in the year 1994 and was made into a movie two years later in 1996. It was the first time ever that John Grisham wrote about a subject relating to the Death Penalty.
The story of the novel had a young attorney Adam Hall traveling to the south to meet with and defend his grandfather Sam Cayhall who is awaiting execution at the Mississippi State Penitentiary. Adam's father had committed suicide earlier when Adam's grandfather had been convicted. His grandfather has been held guilty of having bombed the office of a Jewish Lawyer and is awaiting the death penalty. It turns out in the end that the grandfather was not actually guilty as the crime had been committed by someone else. The book refers to and covers a number of legal technicalities relating to the much debated death penalty.
