Do you have a local district council or local government? Or even a citizens advice centre? They'd be able to tell you what sort of help you could get. Most, however, will only give you financial help if you're off work for more than 30 days.

Unemployment is compensation when you are out of work due to the employer's circumstances. Most teachers have contracts providing for pay if on sick leave. If yours doesn't, use your vacation time.
Then seek public assistance - all the liberals voted into office in the last 3 years love to have people being sustained by the government. Unfortunately, since you have a teaching position, you're probably not an illegal, so it might be a little harder getting them to hand you some money.
