The Colosseum is probably one of the most famous historical tourist attractions on the face of the earth. It is most certainly the most breathtaking ancient monument in the city of Rome. It was originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre. When built, there was room for 60,000 people seated and 100,000 standing. The system of exists for each exit has served as model for stadiums around the world. The emperor and his assistants would occupy the best seats in the house and the social class of spectators diminished nearer the top. It is a beautiful structure, despite its violent history of virtual staged executions. It is especially awe inspiring when lit up at night when lit up at night. There is a large wooden cross inside in memory of the Christian Martyrs who were killed there during the Roman Empire.
