What Is The Language Of Madagascar?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The official languages that are spoken in the country of Madagascar are Malagasy and French. Malagasy is a language that is spoken by almost 90% of the population and the unique feature of this language is that it can not be related with any of the languages spoken in the continent of Africa, although the country itself is in Africa.

The origin of Malagasy could be traced in Malayo-Polynesian languages that are spoken in Indonesia and Malaysia. Its relationship with these languages also makes scholars believe that the Indonesians were the first settlers of the country. But there is no other corroborative evidence to the theory. And it is believed that the Indonesian settlers might have mixed with East Africans and Arabs.

Malagasy language has written literature that is date back to 15th century and has borrowed many words from other languages like Bantu, Swahili and Arab. Since the French colonized the country, the other language that is spoken here is French.
