Is It Possible To Fit Radial Tyres To The Original Rims Of My 88 Inch Wheel Base Series Land Rover?
1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating
Broadly speaking, the answer is no. This is because there is a slim chance that radials on original wheels of 88 inch Series models could slip off the rim under extreme cornering forces.
The best solution is to use wheels from 109 inch Land Rovers, later vehicles or after market wheels.
It is a sensible modification to a Series Land Rover, and one even the purists can carp about. Fitting radial tyres will not only improve ride and handling, the steering will feel a little more positive too. As ever, there is a trade off involved in making modifications, and in this case, fitting radial tyres will make the steering feel heavier, most noticeably when parking.
Given the benefits of fitting radial tyres, the disadvantages are, for most drivers, outweighed by the positive impacts felt on safety, ride and handling.
If you are going to do this, be sure to fit radials all round and never mix cross plies and radials, especially on the same axle, so remember the spare wheel as well.
