I found some very similar creatures called orange spotted newts.  They were orange salamander like animals some with dark brown almost black spots, others with yellowish spots.  I kept them in a ten gallon aquarium and put some dirt in the bottom and managed to get some moss to stay alive.  I had a dish in there that they could get into the water.  Kept the tank very moist, yet very clean.  I put as many live plants in as possible, even through some grass seed in there.  They were so small I did not know what to feed them and ended up finding flightless fruit flies in the pet store.

Apparently they eat worms, insects and other salamanders, they don't hibernate, and they shed their skin every couple of days to every couple of weeks. Some live in the water all the time, and some part of the time, and other breeds just terrestrial, (ground only). Depending on where your son picked them up, will determine what kind of cage you are going to need for it. Phew, do I pass teacher?
