    My goodness, dear.
If one will view the world of people so self serving, isn't this an answer one has already decided?  In my own view in my short life of  72 years, I have been through the wars of my home country, and therefore I have lived these wars of power.  But what I have seen in these wars is of the citizen, and finding that the world of people are not as self serving as you might suggest in your question is already so.  If indeed the whole world is self serving, then I suppose your answer is so, but this seems so negative .  I am not so political and am a simple person, and I hope you shall forgive me in my answer, but I believe we encourage those around us to serve others or not, and must also live our lives in the reality outside of believing people would be so quick to be self serving.  I spent the years of war in Ireland being served by many who opposed my views and my kind, and yet their arms stretched further than the whole of me.  And so, my dear, I would suppose that people may be of better nature than you assume and that we cannot depend on people to be so self serving, unless it is your personal experience that teaches you so.   'Tis a sad state to believe people so. Perhaps tis so that those who are self serving will bring the scoundrels and those ideas with them, but humanskind is not like that in the life I have lived until now.

A perfect answer! This was meant to be a topic for debate yet those much smarter than this simple one deemed it a question.
As such it would have been better to be worded something like this "Can any country in the world continue on the path of deficit spending as the US is now doing without facing ruin?"

well it an old lady not from the USA that replies. It is a good country with ideals perhaps sometimes beyond means, but I think it is the only way to move forward in a life that doesn't assume all are scoundrels. And if this wonderful country goes, then I think it is better to go with good will than not and to take the risk, for all kingdoms fall in the end, and especially where they are manmade

'Mam, I've had nothing to do over the last 2+ years but try to get well and study what's going on in the world. I'm as afraid as I've ever been. What happens to the US pretty much happens to the world in larger and smaller amounts depending on the ties that country has to ours. We are no longer a country which manufacturers anything, we are borrowing hand over fist for everything, and if I can get just two people in this country to understand this I feel I've left the world a better place. How long could you live if you were paying out 20% of your total income just on interest on the money you'd borrowed to help others, be the world's policeman, however it was deemed necessary to be spent. Somewhere real soon this whole thing will come crashing down. I'm not saying let's not help anyone I'm trying to say we need to cut a dollar somewhere for every additional dollar we spend. Once we go under we help no one, not even ourselves.

Not necessarily Doomed.  They may realize that they can vote themselves benefits but still show some restraint or have some disagreement about which benefits to provide.
Perhaps worse is if the elected officials realize that all it takes to get re-elected is to bribe voters with benefits.  Not all of the populace needs to be short sighted, stupid, or gullible - only enough to tip the election one way or the other.

Thank you. I'm sure glad we're not hearing any promises of give-aways this election season.

Those running for U.S Congress will be cranking up the give-away machine before the election.

It's worse than that. We can now vote to give foreigners benefits, as well as ourselves. I'm so glad I receive a foreign paycheck right now! The States are in for a rough ride.

You don't have to vote, a judge in Idaho just this week ruled that illegal immigrants are actually residents and have the rights which legal residents do. Today's paper tells of a Washington civil rights lawyer who is questioning the immigration service for targeting based on race. One investigator in 49 stops nailed 48 illegals. Pretty good shooting if you ask me! She claimed she was scared to live in a country where the residents feared for their safety. About all I can say is Baku beckons.
