In Fan Fiction, What Does 'OOC' Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In fanfiction, OOC stands for 'out of character'. This is when a character from a novel appears different in the fanfiction story to how they are in the actual novel.

An example of a character acting out of character would be if they had a different personality to the original novel. Other examples include the character performing tasks that they wouldn't usually do.

A lot of fanfiction readers disagree with characters that are given different personalities and put in different situations, as they prefer writers to stick to the actual storyline of the books. Other readers, on the other hand, may not mind at all.

Some fanfiction writers often put warnings on their summaries about characters being out of character, in order to prevent reviewers from sending negative feedback.
