An echocardiogram or an 'echo' is a graphic depiction of the heart-beat and movement. It makes use of high frequency sound waves to provide Images of the heart valves and chambers. The sound is produced by moving a hand-held wand placed on the chest of the patient. The report produced in this manner reflects the pumping of the heart. The echo is usually combined with Doppler ultrasound and colour Doppler to assess the blood circulation to the valves of the heart.
The M-mode echocardiography is a scan made on a paper moving at a steady speed to make a single dimension image. Another type of echocardiography is the 2-dimensional echocardiography in which a 2-D fan shaped picture of a section of the heart is hard copied. The Doppler Ultrasonography is yet another kind of echo report which is helpful to assess the blood flow across to the valves and also to note congenital aberrations.
