Can You Explain Managerial Grid?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Managerial Grid theory was developed out of research conducted by Bob Blake and Jane Mouton at the University of Texas in the late 1950's/early 1960's. They left U of T and formed their own company, Scientific Methods Inc. The research and practical implementation of their theory continued over the next 30+ years. Most people do not realize that their ongoing work resulted in the illumination of an additional two behavioral leadership styles; Paternalism and Opportunism. The 1991 publication, 'Leadership Dilemmas - Grid Solutions' references all 7 styles equally.
The best source of additional information is Grid International Inc., the successor company to Scientific Methods.

Managerial Grid is a behavioral leadership model which is developed by Robert Blake. It identifies five different leadership styles based on the concern for people and concern for production.

The model is represented in a grid with concern for production in X axis and concern for people in Y axis. The axis ranges from 1 to 9. The five leadership styles are as under:
      • Impoverished Style (Worst)
      • The country club style
      • The perish style
      • Middle of the road style
      • The team style (Best)
