Palm mute is a guitar technique which can be easily executed by the picking hand. When you are playing a note, mute the note by resting the heel of your picking hand close to the bridge of the guitar. This will not completely mute the sound. A frail sound can still be heard. This technique is usually played on an electric guitar but is also possible on an acoustic guitar. It is very important to practice palm muting as too much pressure will stop the sound completely and improper muting will sound weird. Palm muting is best practiced while playing a power chord.
