Stalingrad is a city of Southwestern Russia. The name of the city has been changed three times. Until the year 1925, it was known as Volgograd. Then the name changed and it was renamed Tsaritsyn. The name again changed in 1961 and from that time it has been known as Stalingrad. The city is located on the Volga River. The city was discovered as a fortress of the Tsaritsyn in the year 1589. Joseph Stalin structured the city's defense against white Russian armies during the period of the Russian Civil War of 1918 to 1920. The city was renamed in his honor.

The city was reduced to wreckage in the Battle of Stalingrad. It was the time of the Second World War. In the postwar era the city was restructured. Nowadays it is an important manufacturing area of the country as well as the most important point in the Russian economy.

The city produced steel and aluminum, engineering products, timber goods, building materials as well as foodstuffs. Stalingrad is the major railroad junction as well as a chief river port. The Eastern terminus of the Volga-Don Ship Canal is situated in this city. According to the census report of the year 2001, the total population of Stalingrad was estimated at around 982,900.

"Until the year 1925, it was known as Volgograd. Then the name changed and it was renamed Tsaritsyn. The name again changed in 1961 and from that time it has been known as Stalingrad."
There's a total mess in this! From it's foundation till 1925 it was called Tzaritzyn ("Yellow waters", in the name of the minor river, now dry). Then it was renamed after Stalin and after Kruschev came to power it was named Volgograd. The name was invented in the 20s by a famous Russian poet Velimir Khlebnikov.
"the total population of Stalingrad was estimated..." Guys, it is VOLGOGRAD, no Stalin any more!
Volgograd Mamaev Hill monument with its Mother Russia statue now is recorded as one of the 7 wonders of Russia and was in the Guinness book for being the tallest statue in the world (102 metres).
