Hedgehogs will only venture out for food during the day if they are really, really hungry. It is an act of desperation. Usually they come out in dry weather because their natural food 'stock', such as slugs and snails will not be so readily available within dry weather.
Sometimes you will see a hedghog during the day if it has been disturbed. For example, if your neighbour is cutting the grass and perhaps bumped into its hiding place, it is likely to run for shelter into another garden.
However, if they are coming regularly then it may be an idea to leave them out a little food. Cat food is ideal, although it should not be fish based. A little mashed banana is said to assist their digestive system and a supply of water should also be made available. Remember that hedgehogs are very small and their snouts are less than an inch from the ground, so always leave food in very shallow dishes !
