The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a country of Southeastern Asia. The total area contained by the territory is estimated at around 331,041 square kilometers. Hanoi is the capital of the country. According to the census report of the year of 2002, the total population was estimated at about 80,200,000. The Vietnamese are around ninety percent of the total population. The rest of the population consists of a minor numbers of Chinese, Hmong, Thai, Khmer and Chan. Vietnamese is the official language of the country, though some other languages are also in use there. The northern part of the country is mountainous. Fan-Si-Pan is the highest peak of the country and it is located in the northern Vietnam. The peak rises to around 3,141 meters. The principal river of the country is the Red River. The Mekong River Delta dominates the southern part of Vietnam. The two major rivers' delta is connected with a narrow coastal plain 1000 kilometers long. The densely forested Annamese Cordillera covers two-thirds of the total territory of the country.

Mineral sources are found in the northern part of Vietnam. A good amount of anthracite and lignite coal is found in that area. Some petroleum is reserved in the southern coast of the country. Rice, sugarcane, coffee, banana as well as tea are the significant food crops of the country. Food processing and fishing are the main industries in the economic life of the country. Vietnam is a manufacturer of steel and phosphates.
