HCV refers to the hepatitis C virus. This is the virus which causes the liver disease Hepatitis C. This disease is caused by contact with the blood of an infected person. A PCR test or a combination of tests as prescribed by the doctor is conducted to determine HCV. A single positive PCR test means a person is infected with HCV. A single negative test cannot prove that a person is not infected. When this happens, the PCR should be repeated.
It is important to note that many of the persons affected by Hepatitis C have no symptoms. It is possible to find the occurrence of HCV in the PCR test, within one or two weeks after being infected with the virus. There is no vaccination to prevent an HCV infection.
