That is a red ear slider. You can research all of the information online with the name and also you can go to a pet store and find a lot of information. Just tell the people the name and they will help you with all of the things you need. They are supposed to be kept warm so if you think that them being outside will keep them warm enough then go for it.

Warm enough is about 75 degrees, if it is not that warm you will need a heat lamp with a reptile bulb for the vit. D that they need to make in their little bodies. If your reptile bulb burns out you can replace it for a short time (until you go to the pet store and buy a new one) with a 60 watt bulb so they can bask on a flat rock or log or something like that. They need to have a bit of water to swim if they are semi aquatic but need to be able to climb out of the water to sun and get warm. (see below) Please get on the internet and read as much as you can about these red eared sliders, while they are somewhat hardy, they also need good care in captivity. They are very smart and curious so make sure you keep them in a place they can not get hurt. They will eventually respond to their name and will be happy to see you for their food, they must be fed in water to digest and the water must be luke warm so they can go to the bathroom which is very important so they don't get blocked up and it kill them. Enjoy their company, they are neat to have and you can become very attached as I have to mine. You may never look at a turtle the same way. I 've learn to have a lot of respect for these amazing creatures! In closing, in most states it is illegal to release them back into the wild if they are not native to the state and even if they are, you need a permit to do so. For those who can not keep them anymore the right thing to do is place them in a well informed new home, like a rescue site. Red eared slider have a whole rescue site of their own on the internet. Please enjoy and be responsible for their well being and happiness. :)
