What Is The Name Of Capital City Of Macedonia?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Skopje is the capital city of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, often abbreviated as "FYROM," so as not to confuse the area with the Greek province of Macedonia. Skopje is home to more than 507,000 Macedonian residents and as such, it is FYROM's largest urban centre. Since Macedonia also has a large Albanian population, Skopje is sometimes referred to as "Shkupi."

The history of this region stretches back to circa 3500 B.C. and the city also gained fame for having been the birthplace of a Byzantine emperor, namely Justinian I, in 483 A.D. Skopje, however, remained a relatively small town through much of the first half of the twentieth century. For example, in 1905, the population stood at just over 35,000. Most of the growth, however, came following the 1920s.

Skopje is a multiethnic and multicultural city. Although Orthodox Macedonians comprise about 66% of the population, Albanians form over 20% and the Roma form nearly 5%. There is also a small minority of Serbs, who make up less than 3% of Skopje.
