The name Walton has evolved from "walled town". In England's early history, a great many towns were surrounded by walls to protect the inhabitants. So a person would have adopted a surname like James of Wall Town, which evolved into James of Walton, and ultimately James Walton.

The English Gazetteer mentions more than 30 parishes and places called Walton in England, with more in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
