Which Area Of The World Has The Most Volcanoes?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

More than half the world's active volcanoes are in the Pacific Ocean in a circle known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. Indonesia is the country with the highest number of active volcanoes. Since the early 1800s, its 70 volcanoes have experienced over 600 eruptions between them. Central America has 60 active volcanoes, Russia has 50, Japan has 45, Africa has 40, Iceland has 20 and Italy has 12. There are also active volcanoes in the United States of America, in the Mediterranean Sea, across southern Europe and on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Auvergne region of France had a lot of active volcanoes about 6000 years ago, but all 50 are now extinct. The only signs that they were active are the rounded hilltops that were formed by magma flows all that time ago.
