Does Midhurst Have A Railway Station?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Unfortunately, it doesn't. Midhurst used to be on the Guildford to Chichester line. However, the line to Chicester closed in 1951 as a result of a collapsed bridge.

The line to Guildford closed down in the 60's as part of the Beeching Plan.

Despite not having a railway station, Midhurst is an hour's drive from Gatwick, and the A272 runs through the town.

Midhurst was originally a junction station connecting lines from Pulborough, Petersfield and Chichester - a third line was suggested to link with Haslemere, on the Guildford - Portsmouth line, but was never built. Passenger trains ceased between Midhurst and Chichester in 1935, the line closing to freight in 1951.
Pulborough to Petersfield (Midhurst was the mid-point of the line) lost its passenger trains in 1955 (whereapon the line from Midhurst to Petersfield closed completely) and all trains to Midhurst ceased in 1964.
The Beeching plan was published (I believe in 1962/3), too late for most of the lines in this area.
