I do not have the instruction booklet to show me how to set it up. I have an cable modem already set up for my computer. I just bought a laptop and need this wireless connection for that.

Do you now have broadband for your Internet or do you still use the modem? If yes, then you don't need the modem any more. The router will replace it. You can usually configure the router via a web interface. First connect one of your computers to the router with either a USB cable or an Ethernet cable. Open your browser and type 192.168.2.1 in the address line. This should open a configuration page. Here I must stop as you don't mention the make of the router. I Would advise you, before making any changes to search on the Internet for the model of your router and download the user handbook from the makers.
