This Question Is Answered:
What Is The Truth About Ford's Controversial Pardon? Is It A Political Sell- Out Of Personal Interest, Or Is It A Courageous Deed Done At A Critical Time?
There are many controversies embellishing the 1970's pardon of Nixon by Ford. His alleged secret deal, blackmailing, political and personal relationship are all part of this conspiracy surrounding Ford. Then there is the pro- Ford, where Ford is justified as a courageous President for pardoning Nixon, where the reasons aren't just because Ford was Nixon's friend, or because Ford made a deal with Nixon, but the reasons are defined by Ford's own patriotism. So, what is the truth?

The true answer is that Nixon needed no pardoning. He resigned before any formal charges could be brought against him. So the pardon was completely unnecessary, therefore a completely political move.

He did it to end the watergate controversy, as he reasoned anyhow.  The decision cost him the election.  I guess the pardon itself became the news instead of Nixon.  It's very difficult to say if it was a deal from the day Nixon selected him for vp.  Nixon was certainly interested in saving himself.  Not having much to go on except Ford's record and reputation, I would have to say that Ford gave the pardon for the sake of the country.
