Is Watching Too Much TV Bad For My Children?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are no rules and very little evidence of how much TV is too much TV. One person's excessive TV watching would be another person's normal evening. Some people would say it is quality of programmes watched rather than quantity one should worry about. However, most experts agree that families need time together and children of all ages need to know that their parents care about them and will listen to them. Too much TV watching by anyone in the family certainly inhibits talking and listening and so can negatively affect family relationships. A long time ago the limited channels on UK TV meant that TV was seen as a medium that actually connected families and the wider community. Everyone watched the same programmes and families watched them together. This allowed them to share experiences and talk about the characters and the programmes during and after the show. Even now so-called "water cooler" programmes, those that make us talk about what happened with people we know, are thought to have a positive effect by bringing people together around a shared interest. This can be quite helpful for parents of teenagers. As well as placing limits ion TV watching try and agree to watch some shows together so that you naturally talk about it during the show and afterwards.

From personal experience I got along alot better with my siblings when our television was limited. Because of this I planned to restrict it for my own children.
My daughter is now 2 and watches TV more than half of her day! All the programmes are prerecorded and prescreened even for the advertisements and I'd say 70% are educational, like word games. I supervise her reactions to each show, frequently participate with her and of course do other learning and playing away from the TV.
I am impressed with what she has learned but notice dificulty communicating and getting her attention away while shes watching.
At this point I am satisfied with the results and think that parental awareness is essential as are other stimulating activities.
