Will The US Attack Iran?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

This is an excellent question and something that many people are considering.  Certainly, Bush and the Republicans could use a boost to their election campaign but with all of the bodies coming back from Iraq, do the American people want to begin another gruesome war, against a nation much stronger than Iraq with many Allies.

I think if they feel that they can find a good enough reason, and some countries to back them (well they'll go if alone if they have to), then there is no reason why they wouldn't begin a massive aerial strike, bombing key installations.  Almost certainly killing hundreds of civilians in their justified Holy War against the Muslim.

If the US do attack Iraq, they will drag the world into a deeper crisis and the gap between the Islamic World and the West will grow wider.

I hope for all of our sakes that they do not.

In the present anti-war climate it's probably unlikely that the US will attack Iran but as Bush is unpredictable who knows. Now the Democrats have the power balance hopefully this will keep Bush's administration under control. It's more likely that the threat of attack will be held over Iran's head as a sabre- rattling ploy to deflect from Bush's other political troubles. By creating an external threat most political leaders think that they can deflect from mistakes elsewhere in domestic and other foreign policy issues.

I think that the US has enough on it's plate with the massive financial and manpower burden that  they've created in Iraq and I hope that if they are stupid enough to consider going into Iran this time the UK will keep out and let them go it alone as most of us here and are disgusted with what's going on in Iraq and it certainly won't help understanding between the West and the Muslim countries and we need all the help we can get to stop extremists of whatever faith and wherever they live.
      Overall probably not .

We need to qualify what we mean by "attack" when considering whether or not the US may engage Iran militarily. If "attack" means an all-out air and ground offensive of the type we witnessed in Iraq in March 2003, it is highly unlikely that the US would initiate such a military plan. Not only are US troops over-stretched in Iraq, but even the hawks in Washington know full well that Iran will put up much stronger resistance that Saddam Hussein's Iraq ever did.

Nevertheless, it is entirely possible that the US will engage in a targeted bombing from the air of a very small handful of suspected nuclear or military sites in Iran, possibly with the help of Israeli forces. This would be a very limited operation and could potentially be launched by US forces already stationed in the region. Additionally, the aim of such an attack would not be "regime change," as it was in Iraq, but simply an attempt to clip Teheran's wings. Yet even such a limited attack may provoke retaliative measures on the part of Iran.

The current, on-going crisis with Iran--now involving not only Teheran's development of nuclear capabilities, but also the state-sponsored hostage taking of 15 British troops--signifies a major escalation of the current row. Blair already broke off direct negotiations with Iran and is now looking at imposing sanctions. It is not at all certain that such sanctions will really deter Iran from its current course and this would, indeed, greatly augment the risk of targeted military attacks against sites in Iran.

Either way we look at it, the row with Iran has only gotten worse over the past 2 years and there is no indication of any future detente.

If Israeli forces are involved, that's like opening the floodgates, Iran would be at war officially with the USA, soldiers of a Jewish state on Muslim soil, wow, that will really escalate things!

Hi epictetus, I agree entirely--the involvement of Israeli forces would make a very delicate situation even more problematic. I do, however, recall reading in "The Economist" and elsewhere about a year ago that Israel was seriously considering taking out Iran's nuclear capabilities if they became too much of a risk.

When the United States attacked Iraq, Britain stood with them and sent forces. I think right the United States will stand with Britain. If, Britain were to see cause to attack Iran, I think the United States will reciprocate. Otherwise, I think Bush is too smart to send to forces unless Iran tips their hand and forces this by attacking United States in some place, not  necessarily on American soil.
