What Are The Characteristics Of Mass In A Liberal Catholic Parish?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Some Roman Catholic parishes are more liberal than others and as a result, the way in which mass is celebrated might be slightly different from those held in more conservative churches.

In a 'liberal' Mass, the homily will often focus more on the social gospel, on alleviating poverty, ending racism and discrimination and following the teachings of Christ--especially those that relate to compassion, love and tolerance. In some cases, the homily or sermon might not be given by a priest, but rather by a lay person. In some cases, Catholic social activists or missionaries are invited to speak to the parishioners.

Additionally, in most liberal parishes, the altar will be closer to the people. Sometimes the pews will be arranged around the altar. Moreover, some parishes will have parishioners pass the consecrated hosts and the wine to each other, rather than having people go up to the altar. This is especially the case when Mass attendance is lower, such as during weekday, or evening Mass.
