Which Are The New Members Of NATO?

    The recent members of NATO include Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria. They became a part of NATO on the 29th of March 2004. The Czech Republic, Poland and Hungry became members in the year 1999. Several countries such as Albania, Croatia, Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Montenegro and even Serbia are expected to become members from 2007 to 2010. The expansion of NATO is seen as a possible threat by Russia as several former members of the Warsaw pact are now part of NATO.

    NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization which is also sometimes referred to as the North Atlantic Alliance. It came into existence as a military alliance when the North Atlantic Treaty was signed on the 4th of April 1949. It is an alliance which was signed for mutual protection and response in the case of external aggression. It is head quartered in Belgium.
